The only handheld GTA release of the year took the series back to its roots with the same top-down free-roaming gameplay that had first defined the series in the early nineties, but all of the great storytelling and mission design of the more recent 3D releases. The result was an old-fashioned feeling GTA with modern production values; easily one of the most playable handheld titles of the year.
Chinatown Wars introduced gamers to spoiled triad member Huang Lee; a man on a mission to avenge his father's death and take control of the triad gangs of a marvellously realised Liberty City. With an overhead isometric viewpoint and 3D visuals, responsive controls, loads of missions and inventive minigames, plus replayable missions and ad-hoc multiplayer, Chinatown Wars was everything a great handheld game should be; fast, rewarding and immediately pick-up-and-play, with enough depth to last hours upon hours glued to your small screen.
